Abstract :
Concepts of Death and Journey of the Soul after Death among the Adi Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh: A Study based on Pénge

Drawing from the oral text pénge (funeral song) and chants in use among the Adi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, this paper primarily aims at examining the concepts of death and soul‘s journey beyond the physical existence. The funeral song is a lengthy one performed beside a dead body by the pénge miri (Pénge singer, hereafter PM) throughout the whole night. The PM describes the Adi philosophy of death, one‘s achievements in life, and the steps to be taken to appease and guide the departed soul in its final journey to the netherworld. The explanation of human death and the soul's journey to another world is primarily centered around the spiritual life as believed and constructed among the pre literate Adi society. This study may throw some light on the essence of the Adi belief in the continuity of this life and the afterlife as depicted in the pénge. The study is mainly empirical, whereby the funeral song was recorded during the real-time performance. Interviews were conducted with professional experts to get a simplified explanation of its content.
