Dhobis of Delhi: An Urban Ethnography from the Margins, 1974–2023

The city of Delhi has long served as a muse for many. Academics, fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, filmmakers, and more recently bloggers and vloggers, have all explored various facets of the city—its history, architecture, and vibrant street food culture. While these works are indeed illuminating, ethnographies focusing on communities living in Delhi, particularly marginalized groups, remain relatively scarce. Among these underrepresented narratives, as the author rightly observes, the story of the washermen (dhobis) is “conspicuously rare.” Subhadra Mitra Channa’s recent monograph Dhobis of Delhi: An Urban Ethnography from the Margins, 1974–2023 addresses this crucial gap in academic literature.
